Hi, I’m Zakk
This is the part where I’m supposed to do what every other counselor and therapist does and give you a copy of my resume. But honestly, right now, I sincerely doubt you care. This is about you, not me.
So, I think you’ll benefit more from understanding who I work best with and have the most success in helping. This way, you’ll be able to quickly figure out whether or not we’ll be a good fit for each other. I’m not really what you’d consider a “generalist” therapist, and so I don’t want you to waste your time if we won’t be a good fit together.
The clients who find the most success with me are the ones who come to therapy ready to work. That doesn’t mean you have to know all the answers. After all, that’s what part of counseling is for. But I do hope you’ll come ready to roll up your selves and learn what you can do to make a positive, healthy change. The old adage is true, “You can’t change your life until you start changing your life.” That means making a change in your situation takes an action step on your part. Getting information about counseling services is a great first step.
I work with a lot of couples who are struggling in their relationships. Sometimes it’s from infidelity or lack of communication. Maybe it’s because you’ve just lost that “spark”. For some couples, it’s because they wake up one day and realize they have no idea who their partner is anymore. Maybe it’s a combination of all those things. I work with couples on communication, rebuilding their intimacy and learning to live in companionship – not opposition – with each other. When couples (even if only one comes to counseling) put effort into this process, I see a lot of success and mended relationships.
I also work with men who are having a hard time but aren’t sure where to turn. A lot of guys struggle with sharing their emotions and feelings, because it’s not the cool thing to do, or somewhere along the way they were told they weren’t allowed to feel that way. As adults, that can turn into big problems like major stress, depression, porn addiction or cheating on your spouse or significant other. Maybe it’s just that you have a wife or girlfriend who just doesn’t get it and you just need a little help in learning to explain yourself better.
I don’t claim to have a magic “therapy wand” that I can wave and make all your problems disappear. I’m also not a “bobble head” therapist who sits and nods at you while you pour your heart out. I’m also not the kind of counselor who will stare at you over my clipboard and make a bunch of weird notes that you have no idea about (because let’s be honest, that’s kind of weird and uncomfortable), and I’m not going to sit there and ask you a bunch of rhetorical questions and then follow that up by saying “How do you feel about that?” I’ve found that’s not really effective.
Here’s the deal: I’m not an expert on everything.
Yes, I have several degrees and a lot of letters after my last name – but that doesn’t make me an expert on your life. You won’t be able to come in for just one appointment so I can give you a list of things that will make everything better. You walk in your shoes every day, and you know what it feels like to be you. I’m here to help you with the tools you need to make the best choices for you.
None of the degrees I hold means I have all the answers. And none of the Christian or “pastoral” titles and credentials mean I’m some sort of up-tight religious “churchy” person who’s judging you or looking down on you. I’m not really interested in making you feel bad for what you’ve done or what you’ve been through. I suspect the world has done enough of that on its own. I’m not so concerned about what you did as I am what got you there and how we can change it.
I’ll never force religion down your throat, but I do hope we’ll have the opportunity to discover how turning our focus to Jesus, along with the tools and resources you’ll learn here can be used to help you get your life back.
